2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. To celebrate and promote the landmark legislation, several Utah agencies and organizations have gathered together to promote the event throughout the year.

ARE YOU READY TO VOTE UTAH?

It’s election season again, a great opportunity to share your values through voting. With no state or federal elections this year, it’s up to you to find out if there will be an election in your area.
We know that in seventeen counties Proposition One is on the ballot. Proposition One is a proposal to increase the sales tax to fund a variety of transportation projects. The following counties will have Prop. 1 on the ballot: Beaver, Box Elder, Carbon, Davis, Duchesne, Grand, Juab, Morgan, Rich, Salt Lake, San Juan, Sanpete, Sevier, Tooele, Uintah, Utah and Weber Counties.
Prop 1 is not on the ballot this year in the remaining 12 counties. If you aren’t sure if your county or municipality will have an election this year, you can find out at VOTE.UTAH.GOV. By entering your street address you can view a sample ballot. You may also contact your town or city clerk for information about elections.

Screening of 'Voices from within'
This coming Monday, Oct. 19, the Disability Law Center is sponsoring a FREE screening of the documentary "Voices From Within" at the downtown Salt Lake City Public Library (210 East 400 South, SLC, UT 84111).

"Voices From Within" provides a glimpse into a world most people never see—a mental institution housing individuals found "not guilty by reason of insanity.” Cameras were placed directly into the hands of four individuals in ...care: Jimmy, Lew, Kevin and Calvin, who have been residents for a combined 160 years. The film takes us through their daily routines, ongoing struggles with mental illness, isolation, and the seemingly impossible step-by-step process to return to the community.
The screening will be followed by a filmmaker-led Q&A panel of legal and medical experts in the field of mental health.

“The 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act occurred in July, but we wanted to wait until more people were on campus to commemorate the event,” Johnson said. “We have some fantastic events planned.”
The week begins with yard signs marking the accessible features of the USU campus—curb cuts, automatic door openers, elevators, etc., and a window display at the Campus Store.
On Thursday, Oct. 8, an information fair will be held at the TSC in the Sunburst and International Lounges from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Lives Worth Living,” a documentary about the disability rights movement that led to the ADA, will run on a continuous loop, and the CPD’s disability history posters will be on display. Visitors to the information fair will be treated to birthday cake from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in celebration of the ADA. This is an Aggie Passport event, so come and get your passport stamped!
On Friday, Oct. 9, America’s Got Talent runner-up Drew Lynch and his partner Sam Conroe will make you laugh in the Sunburst Lounge at 6 p.m. This is a FREE event and open to the public.
In addition, there will be displays by campus and community partners including the DRC, USUSA, Common Ground Outdoor Adventures, AgrAbility, Options for Independence, Up to 3 Early Intervention, the Interdisciplinary Disability Awareness and Service Learning class, Aggies Elevated, Utah Assistive Technology Project, the National Federation for the Blind, WebAIM, the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services, Special Olympics/Best Buddies, the Disability Law Center, the Counseling and Psychological Services office and the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Utah ADA 25 Celebration
"All you need is a chance," Utah Senator Orrin Hatch said during his acceptance speech at the Utah ADA 25th Anniversary Celebration.
Hatch was awarded the ADA Legacy Award by the disability community of Utah including Gov. Gary Herbert, the Independent Living Council and the Legislative Coalition for People with Disabilities. The Senator helped create and pass the ADA in 1990 alongside Senator Ted Kennedy.

22 percent of adults in the United States have some type of disability. Graphic of the United States.

Percentage of adults with select functional disability types:
13 percent of people with a disability have a mobility disability with serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs.
10.6 percent of people with a disability have a cognition disability with serious difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions.
6.5 percent of people with a disability have an independent living disability with difficulty doing errands alone such as visiting a doctor’s office or shopping.
4.6 percent of people with a disability have a vision disability with blindness or serious difficulty seeing even when wearing glasses.
3.6 percent of people with a disability have a self-care disability with difficulty dressing or bathing.
Disability and communities.
Disability is especially common in these two groups, women and minorites.
1 in 4 women has a disability.
3 in 10 non-Hispanic Americans have a disability.
Disability costs 400 billion dollars per year in health care expenditures.
Disability and livelihood.
Nearly half of those with an annual household income of less than 15,000 dollars reported a disability.
1 in 3 unemployed adults who are able to work reported a disability.
4 in 10 adults who have not completed high school reported a disability.
Disability and health.
Adults with disabilities are more likely to be obese, smoke, have high blood pressure and be inactive:
38.4 percent of adults with a disability are obese while 24.4 percent of adults without a disability are obese.
30.3 percent of adults with a disability smoke while 16.7 percent of adults without a disability smoke.
41.7 percent of adults with a disability have high blood pressure while 26.3 percent of adults without a disability have high blood pressure.
36.3 percent of adults with a disability are inactive while 23.9 percent of adults with a disability are inactive.
Adults with disabilities are 3 times more likely to have heart disease, stroke, diabetes or cancer.
